This is a piece of coprolite.
It started as dinosaur dung that got sealed up, exposed to heat and pressure for a few millennia. It dessicated; salts and colored minerals seeped in — in a word, it fossilized. Then someone dug it up and polished it for all it was worth. Today, it’s strangely, uniquely precious.
So to my writer friends, I tell you: Remember the coprolite.
It is a solid reminder that the difference between absolute shit and pure beauty is one hell of a lot of pressure, time, and polishing.
