Have you ever read one of those magical books that just sticks with you forever? Want another one? Well, here you go.

The official blurb calls it “a whimsical retelling of The Little Mermaid“, and… yeah, I can see it that way, if I turn my head sideways and squint. But to me, it stands on its own, and in a sense is almost diminished by the comparison. It’s a curious tale of an unlikely friendship, of hearts and lives, acceptance and rejection, and above all of learning to value yourself.

I hesitate to tell you more because I want you to read it and enjoy the story for yourself.

Some of my readers may not understand the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel. This is definitely the latter, and the art is truly masterful. It’s that rare creation that’s also drawn by the author, the which is sometimes an uneasy partnership. Not here. The story isn’t so much complemented by the art as it is told by it; the words are often almost superfluous.

While the characters are wonderful — in some cases fully-fleshed people I’d truly love to meet — it’s the world that I fell in love with, one that on its face is not much different from our own. There’s a great deal that we see, yes, but so much hinted at that we don’t. I very much hope the writer revisits this setting later and lets us explore it just a little bit more.

[Age appropriate for teens, young adults, and the fully grown. Themes include disabilities (and the use of A.S.L., which is clever), relationships, coming-of-age, and so on. Oh, and mermaids… with teeth.]
