Some Notes From A Siding

I’m on a rail siding just outside of Toledo, just kinda sitting here, watching an empty parking lot.

No, not just me.  There’s a whole train here, waiting for a heavy freight to get past.  But everyone else on board is asleep (not that there’s many of us) so it might as well just be me.  I just finished my book — rereading John Steakley’s “Armor”, one of the best (more…)

F&L: Ohio Is –NOT– Still Voting, And Other News

You may have heard that Ohio is delaying its primary.  It is not — yet.  At the eleventh hour, a judge has blocked the governor’s petition to reschedule in-person primary voting.  Not long after, the state health department ordered all polling places closed and the governor ordered that no results be posted until June 2 so an alternative could be generated.

This proposal wasn’t made from whim, but rather according to CDC guidance and with the concurrence of both state Republican and Democratic parties.  Regardless, the (more…)

The CDC Isn’t Understaffed, And Other Myths

It’s social media; I should just let it go.  People hear something that supports their biases so they Share it without checking, and it becomes common wisdom.  Sometimes it’s gets to a point where everyone knows is true so it’s no longer even discussed, and if you argue you’re nuts.

F&L: Two Angry Furbys

Tomorrow, the 53,000-odd residents of the Northern Marianas will hold their Democratic Caucuses.  Curiously, this territory, which is strongly Republican and has no sway in the November elections, will award 6 at-large delegates and another 5 superdelegates.

Nobody’s running here; nobody’s done any serious polling.  Bloomberg had operatives (more…)

COVID-19: Flattening The Curve

Here’s what is meant by mitigating and flattening the curve.

COVID-19 has between a 5 and 20% hospitalization rate for severe symptoms.  If it infected as many people in the U.S. as influenza we would be looking at a minimum of 1.7 million people in need of hospitalization — and not just for a few days.

No country in the world is prepared to take on this kind of caseload quickly. (more…)

F&L: Another Tuesday

They call it “Super Tuesday II”, but it’s only six states and a couple are foregone conclusions.    Mississippi is almost certainly going Biden, and most of the others are leaning that way.  The wins and losses are well known in advance, so don’t expect big surprises.

Except — maybe you should. (more…)

Fear and Loathing: The Plague Market

After opening fifteen hundred points down, the stock market dropped another two thousand.  Consumer goods are up 20% — hoarding toilet paper does some good after all — but the rest of the market is through the floor.

Coronavirus fears, a massive price war for oil, and a certainty among financial wonks that a downturn is due:  All these come together to create a truly nasty couple of days, (more…)

Sports Desk: Regime Change

We have a new guest columnist; someone came in and left this on the empty desk over in our Sports Center.  Unlike most others, this one also left a release.  Wonders never cease.  -Editor

Football season’s over and the Virus is keeping a lot of folks home, but there’s always good conversation over at my favorite watering hole.  There were a bunch of us talking about Tulsi Gabbard yesterday, and her strange Hawk and Dove view of foreign policy.  Makes sense to me, but not everybody gets it.  But then McK weighed in on the subject, and his words are worth repeating (more…)

Coronavirus Panic Is Insane

I am NOT a medical expert.  I’m not a doctor, an immunologist; I’m not even a licensed ambulance attendant any more.  So when I tell you things about a viral outbreak, you should take them with a grain of salt.  (So to speak.  I’m also not a pharmacist.)

But when I talk about panic, you should listen to me.  When I tell you about history, you should listen.  And when anyone else who is not an immunologist (more…)

F&L: And Then There Were Two… Uh, Three

It’s official.  The race is down to three candidates:  Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and… oh, yes, Tulsi Gabbard.

With Warren’s announcement this morning, the last of the minor candidacies has ended.  We won’t see eight people on the stage in the Arizona debate; we’ll see two.  Not three, mind; The Party has been (more…)
