Of Course They Didn’t Convict.

Trump’s second impeachment is over in record time, and of course they didn’t convict him. They were never going to.

Some among you are disappointed, but what’s unsettling is that a few of you are actually surprised. You seem to have been under the misapprehension that this was a trial or something instead of the latest installment of the D.C. Bread And Circus Show (Hold The Bread).

(To be fair: I also thought it was a trial. My bad. -Editor)

The Irrelevant In The Room

One of the things that very much doesn’t matter, and I can’t stress this enough, is Donald Trump’s opinion on anything.

After five years of being a windbag who dominated the press, he has been silenced. His last messages were “Go down to Congress and tell them…” followed by “We love you; you’re special; go home.” He is now off Twitter, off Facebook, and if Parler were still functioning— but of course it’s not.

Impeachment II: This Time It’s Personal

Well, all right; last time it was personal too — and political. It’s a pop culture reference, not an epitaph; it’s not graven in stone.

So — yes, Trump is getting impeached — again. And, even though the Senate won’t reconvene until the Inauguration is over, it’s actually meaningful. We all know that the first penalty that can be assessed is removal from office, but they could well pursue the second penalty, which would forbid him from ever again holding any office of trust. This process is thus unlikely to get dismissed as moot.

Why Won’t They Impeach?

In point of fact, I rather think they will.  Just… not now.

Let us leave aside all discussion about whether Mr. Trump deserves impeachment.  There’s a widespread public belief that he does, and the present House was elected at least partly in order that he might be removed from office.  In the Mueller Report, the suggestion of obstruction is enough on which to base a charge — if not in court, then at least in Congress.  This plus a majority opposed is all that is necessary for him to be impeached, and any discussion of whether or not he deserves it is beside the point. Pence: Pure Unadulterated Genius?

It’s news to nobody that President-Elect Trump may be the least popular prominent American since Nixon left town, and before that since the little fuss after Lincoln’s election.  For you who need reminding, we’ll see some public demonstrations of that fact starting around the 20th of January.

The call is about to go up, and due to a now-famous mis-Tweet, the rallying cry has been born:  “Unpresident him!”  The new protests will be all about obstructing Mr. Trump’s agenda at every turn, and the goal driving it all will be to remove the man from power. (more…)
