It’s easy to forget, but there’s a big chunk of New Hampshire that exists cheek-by-jowl with Vermonters that live on opposite sides of the Connecticut River valley. It’s a demographic the state doesn’t quite know what to do with; the urban centers (such as they are) are lumped in with mountain recluse compound-dwellers to form the Fifth State Senate District. Fifty thousand people live right along here; two thirds are Pantsuit Nation loyalists and the rest vote MAGA. There might be a moderate somewhere but if so he’s in hiding. The only reason there isn’t open war is only the MAGA faction is armed — and they just want to be left the hell alone.

Is Donald Trump a dangerous madman? Is Hillary Clinton assassinating her political foes? Is someone rigging the ballots and cheating us out of our elections?
I’m pretty sure Trump is far more clever and personable than he lets on, and I’m also quite certain that nobody who’s as much in the spotlight as Senator Clinton could sneak away from her Secret Service entourage long enough to commit murder. There is more than one valid and effective solution to our problems. Unfortunately, the political parties in our strongly divided system are far more concerned with blaming one another than in getting anything done. This is hardly a purely American phenomenon, of course; that’s just a handy example.
The evident solution is NOT to discard parties and then recreate the process from the ground up. Instead, it’s to get (more…)
