Wisconsin D.A.: Sic Semper Tyrannis!

In Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, five people were criminally charged with felony voter fraud on Thursday. Their offense was, allegedly, using a post office box rather than a physical address on registration forms. The charges carry sentences of up to three and a half years in prison and a $10,000 fine, and would suspend the right to vote of any person convicted.

One of the people charged was homeless, and living in his truck at the time; a married couple was reportedly living in an R.V. and traveling the country.

And only three out of the five voted in 2020.

F&L 2020: Recounts and the Electoral College

Much as Gore did in 2000 — albeit far more loudly — President Trump is refusing to concede the election. Legal teams have been mobilized in several states to draw attention to certain practices which, viewed objectively, are at least questionable. But does this mean Trump still has a chance to win? Why would he challenge the results if he didn’t?

It’s complicated. (You knew I was going to say that.)

When Will We Know For Sure?

Not today, and probably not tomorrow either. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

In a normal year, we’d have most of these things figured out by now, but this is not a normal year. Thanks to COVID-19, a record number of votes came in by mail, and the outdated laws in most states haven’t yet caught up with the new normal. As a result, some states will still be receiving votes through Friday, one or two over the weekend, and so on. It gets complicated, and there’s no reason you should have to know all the details.

But, what the hell — that’s what we’re here for. Right? …Right?

Fear and Loathing: Handicapping 2020

It’s coming down to the wire, and there’s a ton of nervousness out there about who will win the election. Yes, Uncle Joe has a serious lead in the polls, but The Donald has been shown to be making gains among the undecideds — and we must remember that Clinton too led in the polls in 2016.

After all is said and done, it’s not the popular vote that will decide the election, nor should it be. It’s the Electoral College.

Fear and Loathing: Bernie Sanders Drops Out

I’m warning you up front:  This is not news.  It’s a biased opinion piece.  The only news is that Bernie Sanders has ended his presidential campaign.

Read anyway.  It’ll be good for you, and you might even learn something. (more…)

What’s The Deal With The Voter Rolls?

One of the most recent political alarms (if you’re still keeping track) is the request from the President’s commission on election reform for state voter rolls, followed almost instantly by half the states in the Union refusing to send them.

To be honest, confusion seems to be the most common reaction I’ve seen, ranging from “Why do they want it?” to “Why wouldn’t we give it?”  So I’ll explain, at least in brief. (more…)
