Aside: On The Decoy Effect

People are deliberately inducing anxiety in you in order to manipulate your decisions.  You’re already aware of this, at least subconsciously; consider:
How many coffee sizes are there?

If you answered three — either small, medium, and large or tall, grande, and venti depending on where you get your caffeine — then (more…)

F&L 2020: And The Winner Is…

It’s past midnight.  Primary Day has come and gone in New Hampshire, and (unlike in Iowa) we have a clear winner:  Bernie Sanders.

We actually have three winners, if we include the Mayor In Waxwork.  Amy Klobuchar’s come-from-behind resurgence to a 20% return is enough to get her taken seriously going forward, which makes her the real story of today.  If she can sustain that momentum through either South Carolina or Nevada, she’s suddenly a top contender. A Note On Iowa

It’s tomorrow, and we still don’t know who won.

Yes, it’s embarrassing. But it’s something that’s to be expected in any contest when the results are close; this is something that people should have anticipated happening, to be frank. (more…)

F&L: Mike Bloomberg Buys The DNC

It’s true.  Former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg donated a quarter million to the DNC; two days later, they announced a rules change for the February debate in Nevada to permit him on the stage.  Joe Biden’s reply is classic:  “He’s not even on the ballot in Nevada.”  My own thought is somewhat more cynical:  If the DNC could be bought so cheaply, why didn’t the Climate Debate people (or Tulsi!) pay them off sooner?

Of course it’s not that simple; these things never are — and I’ll get into that.  But (more…)

Fear & Loathing 2020: Take The Iowa Challenge

Nate Silver is trying to get us to commit before Iowa.  I’m willing.

The following is a transcript of my live Twitter rant, fresh off the Mojo Wire. It’s edited slightly for format purposes and to remove potentially libelous content about Betsy Warren’s dog, who when all is said and done has done nothing to deserve that sort of treatment.  Besides, I love Bailey; he’s a Good Boy, isn’t he?  Yes he is!  (Follow @FirstDogBailey on Twitter!) F&L: Elizabeth “No Nickname” Warren

Amy has her Klobucharmy; Bernie has his Bros; Mayor Pete is… well, he’s Mayor Pete.  But Elizabeth Warren doesn’t have a nickname.  Not one that she’d want, anyway; Trump’s invented one or two, and so have some other of her detractors (and I’ll thank you to not use them in the comments).  But not her.  She’s Elizabeth.  She’s not warm and cuddly; she works for a living, and does a damn good job at it.  And sure, she loves dogs and likes a beer now and then, but she’s not Liz or Lizzie; she’s Elizabeth.  Her team?  Team Warren. Fear and Loathing 2020: An Introduction

How many more of these goddamn elections are we going to have to write off as lame but “regrettably necessary” holding actions? And how many more of these stinking double-downer sideshows will we have to go through before we can get ourselves straight enough to put together some kind of national election that will give me and the forty million people I tend to agree with a chance to vote for something, instead of always being faced with that old familiar choice between the lesser of two evils?

—Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72

Hunter is dead, and I’m not him.  Now we’ve got through the bad news, let’s take a good hard look at what’s changed in the past 48 years.

OK; I lied:  We’re not through with the bad news. (more…)

The Warren – Sanders Spat

I don’t normally do this.

My serious political writing may not appear in national publications, but I still follow the rules of journalistic ethics as best I can.  Verification is two independent sources; direct quotes are desired; hard evidence is necessary before I go to press.  As a result, I’ve achieved a curious distinction, somewhat unique in this age:  I’m not often mistaken, and when I’m biased I tell you.

In this case, I’ve got no (more…)

It’s Trump, God Help Us

It’s January 16, 2020, and I’m calling the election.  It’s Trump, God help us.

I had this revelation not during the debates on the 14th, when it became apparent CNN’s production staff was attempting to provoke a fight between Warren and Sanders by asking carefully orchestrated questions.  It wasn’t on the 15th when they released a private hot-mike conversation that immediately followed the debate.  No, it’s when (more…)

“But She Lied…”

Good Lord!  I am –so– bloody sick of this.  Senator Warren didn’t lie.  She didn’t use her Native American ancestry to get a job at Harvard.  And it’s insane that anyone needs to defend her on these grounds.

It started in (more…)
