There’s been tremendous excitement over a very minor development in the U.S. Senate, and we expect speeches, parades, and perhaps a big brass band next. We’ll cover that later, but first, here are some things you might have missed if you’ve only been reading the headlines.

We’ve all heard about Roe v. Wade being overturned. It has dominated the headlines on every outlet from CNN to Fox News ever since the judgment was released, to be replaced only by other SCOTUS decisions, militant yet unrealistic statements by politicians, and a massive barrage of fundraising ads from the Democratic party.

Contrary to public belief, other occurrences of note have taken place during this time, and it’s only right that we should share them.

Midsummer has passed, and the days will now get shorter and shorter until Christmas and snow. Not to worry, though; there’s plenty of hot summer between now and then. And that’s the weather; now on to the news!

Yes, there are hearings. You already know all there is to know about those, so, as usual, let’s move on to things you won’t see on the front page.

There’s tremendous excitement this morning about several developments in the Ukraine that nobody has any clear picture of, and the 24-hour infotainment channels will tell you all about all the things they don’t know. They’ll bring in experts and have lively discussions and it’ll be a lot of fun for them, so we won’t spoil it by getting involved.

Instead, here are a few things that have happened recently that you might have missed:

War in Ukraine continues, COVID rages on, and Amber was Heard.

But other things have happened in the past few days, and it would be a shame to miss them. Here are just a few:

The Ukraine War dominates headlines everywhere. This is doubtless a good thing, since it’s probably the single most important event in the world today, and likely to have even more far-reaching long-term consequences than even the ongoing COVID epidemic.

Unfortunately, this headline dominance has a tendency to drown out other useful stories. There are always important things happening all over the world; it hasn’t stopped spinning despite Russia’s invasion of yet another neighbor. This is why we do these Updates, after all, so let’s take a look:

The Ukraine War is all over the headlines, and rightly. It’s going to be a defining moment for this generation and the next, just like COVID was but apparently still isn’t despite disconcertingly high hospitalization numbers.
